Wonderful SOS Children Village in Xienghouang, Laos.
One quarter of the population of Laos live in poverty. Most children face daily hardship. Half of those under fives are chronically malnourished, while over one in ten 5-14 year-olds are forced to work to survive. SOS Children’s Villages has stepped up its efforts ever since beginning work in Laos in 1995.
This photographic reportage was produced in the village of Xienghouang in tandem with the filmmaker Stefano Nicoli (www.stefanonicoli.com/project/sos-childrens-villages-laos) to provide SOS with photo-video material aimed at ongoing raising campaign funds. It is located in the north-east of Laos in Ban Nam Ngam, in the commercial centre of Phonsavan. The province is one of the most deprived and remote in the country. Children often suffer from malnutrition, and even when they do get enough to eat, are rarely fortunate enough to attend school. Unexploded landmines from the war in the 1970s continues to have a devastating effect on the lives of whole communities. Awareness is limited, and children are particularly vulnerable to injury or death.
One of SOS main focuses in Xiengkhouang is treatment for malnutrition. Undernourished children come into SOS care for ongoing therapy, and are offered a nutritious diet along with vitamin supplements and vaccinations to help them reach a healthy weight. When they return home, SOS keeps in touch to ensure that they continue to thrive. As in SOS other Villages, they provide full schooling for many children for whom an education would otherwise be unattainable.
